Many contemporary television shows, movies, and books feature characters we root for despite their questionable behavior. Why? Research shows that when a character commits a negative action but is motivated by altruism, we are more likely to see that character in a positive light. Is this also true in real life? What does this say about us? Feel free to bring examples of your favorite "bad" character from a book, show, and/or movie when we discuss this topic at Salon in November.
To prepare for the discussion, read any of the articles below, watch an episode of Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, or White Lotus, and/or just come with your own ideas.
