A NEW YORK TIMES "TEN BEST BOOKS OF 2022"  An Oprah’s Book Club Selection An Instant New York Times Bestseller An Instant Wall Street Journal Bestseller A #1 Washington Post Bestseller

"Demon is a voice for the ages—akin to Huck Finn or Holden Caulfield—only even more resilient.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick

"May be the best novel of 2022. . . . Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.” (Ron Charles, Washington Post)

From the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees, a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Please bring an appetizer, dessert or wine to share.

Join us for our signature Speaker Night. Theme: Contact! (Connection | Communication). Social time, dinner and announcements 7-8 p.m.;  speaker 8-9 p.m.

SHANNON MULLEN is a multi hyphenate—journalist, author, screenwriter, playwright, podcast host and film producer. Her latest book is about a young mother in Maine whose weekly letters to her Governor helped both women brave the first year of the pandemic.

    More Links, Less Connection

Shannon is a smart, dynamic speaker (visiting us from Maine!) and will talk about the core themes of this book and beyond. How do we connect to one another, with civility and humanity, in times of seemingly escalating social fracture and mistrust, in both public and personal discourse. (Note from Kristin: "I saw her at a book event where she was interviewed by NPR’s Meghna Chakrabarti, who happens to be one of her closest friends!"

“A remarkable story of work, worry, art, faith, community, life, and hope. An instant classic.”  — Heather Cox Richardson, author of the New York Times bestseller Democracy Awakening

“A heartfelt and moving story . . . Just as important, it’s also a well-timed lesson in civics.”  — Richard Russo, author of Empire Falls

Bio: Shannon A. Mullen has been telling stories in one form or another since childhood. She grew up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and has spent more than two decades contributing to national programs on public radio, including MarketplaceMorning EditionAll Things Considered, and Weekend Edition, and print reporting for The New YorkerBoston Magazine, and The Boston Globe, among others. For May we discuss YELLOWFACE by R.F. Kuang

an instant NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER and REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK.

“Hard to put down, harder to forget.”—Stephen King, #1 New York Times bestselling author

White lies. Dark humor. Deadly consequences… Bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American—in this chilling and hilariously cutting novel from R.F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Babel.

Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars. But Athena is a literary darling, while June literally nobody. Who wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks.

With its totally immersive first-person voice, Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. R.F. Kuang’s novel is timely, razor-sharp, and eminently enjoyable.

Members bring an appetizer, dessert, or wine to share.

Foodies: Join us for May's seasonal cooking review. Maxi's Kitchen by Maxine Sharf -- a food blogger and recipe developer. The youngest and only daughter with two older brothers, Maxine grew up cooking with her family and could roll a wonton for as long as she can remember. Her mom is Korean and Chinese, and her dad is Russian, Romanian and Polish, so Maxine was exposed to lots of different flavors in the house. Maxine has always had a passion for food, something that led her to struggle with her weight as an adolescent. She openly discusses this challenge, how she still to this day works to find a healthy balance, and she attributes her passion for healthy alternatives to these formative years.

For our Cooking Reviews, a member hosts, and each attendee selects a recipe from the preselected Chef. Members prepare and bring their selected recipe to the event in serving dishes with serving utensils. Together, everyone samples the delicious dishes, and discusses impressions about the recipe, the author's style, snd more. If you are not "a cook" or don't have time, you can RSVP with the '2-bottles-of-wine' option.
